The new Miss South Africa for 2016 has been crowned on 19 March 2016 at Carnival City!

The 2015 Cell C and Sun International Miss South Africa Pageant took place in Sun City's renowned Super Bowl, and the winner of this auspicious title, is Liesl Laurie.

Me Laurie went on to take part in the Miss World competition on Dec 19th, 2015, in Sanya, The People’s Republic of China.  South Africa was impressively placed 2nd after the Judges' interviews, and placed no 10 overall of the top 11.

The results were:  Miss Indonesia 3rd, Miss Russia 2nd, and Miss World 2015 is Miss Spain!

What about Miss Universe?  National Costumes?

Liesel Laurie, Miss South Africa 2015BIO:  Liesl Laurie was crowned as Queen in the Miss South Africa 2015 pageant held at Sun City on Sunday, 29 March.

She is a 24-year-old model, who is also a B.Com graduate, and hails from Eldorado Park in Johannesburg.

She is passionate about charity and, on her profile on on the official Miss South Africa website, said at the time: "I have been working with a number of non-profit organizations that include Babies Behind Bars and Pilgrim Oasis Community Children’s Outreach in Eldorado Park and adjacent informal settlement in Kliptown.  Ziphozakhe zokufa, the runner up/default Miss South Africa for 2014 (who took the title after her predecessor, Rolene Strauss, was crowned Miss world 2014), crowned her at the 2015 pageant.

The Miss SA 2015 finalists were:

The finalists come from around the country: Seven are from Gauteng, three from the Western Cape and one each from Kwa-Zulu Natal and Mpumalanga.
They were Busi Mahlangu, Chanelle Sardinha, Danelle de Wet, Gugulethu Banda, Kim Wentzel, Liesl Laurie, Nicole Lee Lamberts, Ntsiki Mkhize, Refilwe Mthimunye, Shanè Naidoo, Sihle Makhanya and Taryn Morris.

Miss Universe - The 1st Runner up to Miss SA Liesl Laurie, Refilwe Mthimunye, 24,represented South Africa at the Miss Universe 2015 Competition.  It was the 64th Miss Universe pageant, and held on 20 December 2015 at The AXIS, Las Vegas, Nevada, USA.

Me Mthimunye placed top 15.  The top 5 was France, Colombia, Phillipines, Australia, and USA (USA was for the 52nt time in history in the top 10).  Miss Universe 2015 is Miss Philippines, 2nd was Miss Colombia, and 3rd Miss USA.

Ndebele-, and English speaking, Me Mthimunye, 24, is a 3rd year law student, model and founder of the Princesses Foundation. Her hometown is a small town called Bronkhorstspriut, where she grew up being raised by a single mother.

On a more personal note, I have to add that the 2015 Miss SA competitions was not one of the best productions South Africa has presented.  It would be closer to the truth if I dare mention that this was one of the worst productions I have had to endure. This streak continued with the Miss World Competition that was televised live on SABC3, and the Miss Universe that was live streamed only.  In the latter event, the most embarrassing incident occurred for the entire world to see: the crown was mistakenly awarded to Miss Colombia, one minute later taken off her head and rightfully awarded to Miss Philippines. I have also found over the years that SA never competes well with their national costumes.  It is sometimes referred to as fantasy outfits, and should leave NO stone unturned.  Imaginations should soar. But.  It seems that it is not taken as serious as it should be.  Here's the national costumes from South Africa that was seen by the world.

The crown:  This is the second year that a new South African crown (and a very beautiful one I must add - and by some referred to as "that" crown) have been designed for the winner to wear during her year of reign.  Read more about it on the 2014 page - and for more background,  The Style Bible has a great chapter on accessories and the title "Miss South Africa" as the largest competition of its kind in SA, so maybe the answer lies in there somewhere.
